"Outer Banks": Season 3 Review

CONTENT WARNING: Outer Banks season 3 spoilers

In Season 1 of the Netflix series, Outer Banks viewers were exposed to the island life of John B, JJ, Sarah, Kiara, and Pope: five teenagers living their best lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Throughout the last two seasons, these five teenagers have been looking for gold that is said to have been kept in Outer Banks, dealing with dangerous enemies along with  the everyday problems of teenagers.

After escaping Sarah’s family at the end of Season 2, the Pogues, the name that the five have dubbed their group, are living on a deserted island. They are eventually saved, but their seemingly safe rescue turns into a kidnapping by a Barbados native, Carlos Singh, who wants the gold that the teens are hunting for. Along the way, the budding relationships of JJ and Kiara, Pope and Cleo, a new addition to the team, and John B and Sarah, are also explored, deepening the bond between this friend group of Pogues and Kooks.

Overall, I did not enjoy most of this season, but I particularly liked that it focused more on the personal lives of the five teenagers, rather than furthering the gold hunt. I did enjoy that the gold hunt ended, as I feel as though it was dragged on for the past two seasons. Although Outer Banks was initially created to be a fun, mysterious series, I think that the storyline was dragged on for far too long, and there were many far-fetched plot twists and additions that were completely unnecessary.  For example, John B’s father coming back into the series consistently threw me off, as it was difficult to continue comprehending what was going on, exactly. Therefore, I think that the series was entertaining, but it wasn’t as appealing nor as interesting as the first seasons were.
