Why Everyone Should Watch "Good Will Hunting"

Those who have taken an economics class might be familiar with the law of diminishing marginal utility. Essentially, it states that the happiness associated with a product decreases the more you consume it. Well, economists and students alike, I am proud to tell you that I have found an exception to this law: watching the movie Good Will Hunting, starring Matt Damon, Ben Afflick, and Robin Williams. Though I’ve watched this cinematic masterpiece countless times, it’s my go to suggestion for any movie night.

While the premise of Good Will Hunting sounds a bit cliche at first glance, the character development and complex, yet realistic, dilemmas make this movie a must-watch. The protagonist, Will, played by Damon, has a ridiculously high aptitude; he is a prodigy at economics, literature, physics, and, most notably, mathematics. In spite of his genius, he chooses to become a janitor at MIT. By chance, an MIT professor, Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård), notices Will’s extraordinary talents and pushes Will to live up to his full potential. Will adamantly refuses, but after going to jail for a street fight, Professor Lambeau grants him bail provided that Will follows his conditions: attend weekly mathematics meetings with the professors and see a psychologist.

This is where Sean comes in. Sean, played by Robin Williams, is a retired psychologist who reluctantly agrees to meet with Will. I personally found Sean to be one of the most interesting characters in this movie. Initially, Will tries to take advantage of Sean’s kind-hearted personality, making snarky and unnecessary comments, which Sean gracefully condones. But when Will hits a particular vulnerability of Sean, he loses his entire cool, pinning Will to the wall and yelling at him. As viewers, we are able to get an inside look into not only who Will is, but also Sean, and what sets him off. Momentarily, we also see Will get rattled at Sean’s rage, which shows a new side to his usual condescending and don’t-care nature.

As the movie progresses, we see Sean manage to penetrate through Will’s shell with riveting and impressive dialogue. The way Williams effortlessly delivers each monologue is rich and impactful, without being cheesy. Sean simply reminds Will that though he may be extremely academically smart, he will never have the wisdom that comes with age with his current mindset. As a result, we as viewers gradually start to see a more humble and open Will as he confronts his past. Damon’s portrayal of Will is a testament to his stellar acting. Will is a multi-faceted character who is deeply flawed, yet as a viewer, I can’t help but feel deeply attached to him. Though he may act arrogant and oftentimes rude, he doesn’t necessarily act defensive toward criticism.

Although both Williams and Damon showcase stellar performances in their respective roles, the side characters of Good Will Hunting, Skylar ( Minnie Driver), and Chuckie (Ben Affleck) are what really make this movie what it is. Skylar is a smart and independent Harvard student who eventually becomes Will’s love interest, though they eventually break up due to Will’s self-destructive character. But even beyond the romantic relationships portrayed in the movie, the friendships are some of the most heartwarming examples of companionship I have ever witnessed. The love that Will has for Chuckie and his other friends is palpable, as Chuckie is seen to always have Will’s back, going as far as to compromise his own happiness for Will’s wellbeing.

And now for the climax. I won’t spoil it because every person deserves to watch that scene with fresh eyes, but let’s just say it could melt even the coldest of hearts.

Sean manages to break Will down in a conversation that impacts me every time. The acting is superb as Will and Sean share a life-changing conversation which gives Will major introspection and pushes him to finally break out of his comfort zone. We see Will completely break down, being his most raw and vulnerable self, and finally, we understand exactly why he is so guarded and closed off.

Overall, the character development that Will undergoes and the realistic character relationships and flaws are what make this movie a must-watch. It must also be noted that while this review primarily concerned the plot of Good Will Hunting, a significant factor in this movie’s success and my personal enjoyment was the incredible acting. Matt Damon, Robin Williams, and Ben Affleck have every ounce of my respect (except Ben, maybe… who cheats on Jennifer Garner?).  It’s not your fault if you haven’t watched this movie yet, but it better be in your Amazon cart by tonight!
