Advisory: Lexington’s Biggest Hit
After the mess of a year that LHS just had, the entire student body is finally back at school. After the unbreakable technological boundaries faced, students have praised the school's never-ending supply of greasy pizza, but nothing has overcome the impact of advisory.
“I was so stressed at the beginning of the year, but I could feel my problems flying away during our mindful moment,” Swati Sriram, a sophomore, reported. “I can’t believe I thought that I needed less homework to feel relaxed! All I needed was a two-minute YouTube video telling me to stay calm.”
Across all grades, these mindful moments have drastically improved students’ mental health. In response to high levels of student stress, the administration implemented the genius idea of incorporating classic meditation ideas that truly make sense to every student. Good thing they didn’t listen to student advice asking for less work and a less competitive environment when the solution was so simple.
Advisory has also provided a wonderful bonding experience for students:
“When I first came to LHS, I was so worried about making new friends, but then I heard during icebreakers that there is another girl who likes the color blue,” said a freshman. “I’ve never met anyone else whose favorite color is blue!”
Even best friends are learning more about each other:
“I’ve known Sam for nine years now, but I never knew that he would be a cheerio if he was a cereal! Learning this about him was so fascinating! Now, I feel like I have barely cracked the first layer of our friendship!” exclaimed an anonymous student.
Aside from creating a better community, advisory has provided an educational experience in which students can analyze LHS’ all-school read, Interior Chinatown.
“Students were so excited to discuss Interior Chinatown, especially because they were so awake and alert on a Monday morning! I’m really glad that people are so eager to connect with their class,” an advisory teacher said.
All in all, advisory has been an exciting experience for everyone at LHS, and it is truly one of the school’s best decisions yet. Students’ mental health has drastically improved, and everyone feels a greater sense of connection to the LHS community. In the future, the administration hopes to include more fun icebreakers and bonding experiences, and students can’t wait.
